Krai, Russia on the left bank of Amur River, at 50�34 N 137�00 E. It is located
on the BAM railway line, 356 km northeast of Khabarovsk. Population: 281,035
(2002 Census).
��In the Chinese language the city is also known as ??? (Gongqing Cheng),
literally 'Komsomol City'. Originally part of imperial China, the area came
under Russian rule after the 1858 treaty of Aigun. The city was founded in 1932
and ultimately built as an industrial center by the Communist youth organisation
Komsomol.
